Our group is meeting at the traditional shophouse in one of Singapore Heritage areas. The row of one or two storey houses are a traditional type for the Straits region. The ground floor was used for the family business and the upper floors were the living quarters. The initial simple timber structure over the period of time and with increasing wealth and affluence became lavishly decorated in a style called Chinese Baroque with Malay, Chinese and European influences.
The shophouses were connected at the front by a covered path called the “five-foot way” because the width between the building and the street had to be exactly five feet. That linking offered customers and residents a protection from the elements and a social space.
The Reading Room is located in one of the shophouses.
